Artist in Residence: Introduction to Coiling
Making Coiled Baskets and Rugs
Monday, July 20
7:00pm - 8:30pm
Learn about coiling, one of the oldest known textile construction techniques, by constructing a small coiled basket or flat rug using provided and upcycled materials. Registration required.
Learn about coiling, one of the oldest known textile construction methods, practised in basket-making traditions among indigenous Canadian makers and cultures in Africa, North America, Asia, and beyond.
Using provided and upcycled materials including fabric strips, repurposed yarn, cord, and textile offcuts, participants will learn the coiling technique by constructing a small coiled basket or flat rug.
Coiling requires no loom, no machinery, and no cutting beyond basic preparation. The materials are deliberately sourced from what already exists, making this workshop an exploration of sustainability and
resourcefulness alongside craft skill. The rhythmic, repetitive nature of coiling makes it especially well-suited to intergenerational groups: accessible and meditative, with forms that can be as simple or as complex as each participant's comfort allows.
Participants are encouraged to bring any fabric scraps or yarn they wish to incorporate into their own piece. Open to all ages, no experience is needed. Presented in partnership with the Brampton Arts Organization. Registration required.
