Jewellery — The Art of Adornment in South Asia
Tuesday, September 15
7:00pm - 8:30pm
Taking inspiration from objects at the ROM, we will explore various jewellery traditions in South Asian history and learn how these traditions shape what we wear today. Registration required.
Why do we love to decorate ourselves with precious metals and stones, and assign so much value to them? Taking inspiration from objects at the Royal Ontario Museum, this talk explores various jewellery traditions in South Asian history. We will look at how gold and silver became more than currency, acting as symbols of protection and family pride, why rubies and sapphires held such power, and how regional styles and meanings shift throughout South Asian history. Join us to find out how these traditions of wealth and beauty continue to shape what we wear today. Presented in partnership with the Royal Ontario Museum. Registration required.
