Artist in Residence: Introduction to Hand Weaving
Saturday, June 13
4:00pm - 5:30pm
Learn the fundamentals of hand weaving using an accessible, low-barrier format: a simple cardboard loom, a tapestry needle, and yarn. Registration required.
Learn the fundamentals of hand weaving using a simple cardboard loom, a tapestry needle, and yarn. Cardboard loom weaving translates directly to the principles of larger frame or floor loom weaving - warp, weft, over-under structure, tension, and pattern - but requires no specialist equipment and no prior experience, making it an accessible way to learn the fundamentals.
In this session, participants will learn how to prepare their own cardboard loom, dress their own warp, and begin weaving a small textile sample. A variety of yarn in different weights, textures, and colours will be provided. Shiemara will introduce vocabulary from weaving traditions around the world, inviting participants to reflect on the role weaving has played in cultures globally and within their own family histories and communities.
This workshop creates space to honour and discuss weaving as a living inheritance for all of us. Each participant will leave with a small woven piece to take home, along with the materials and instructions to continue weaving independently. Open to all ages, no experience is needed. Presented in partnership with the Brampton Arts Organization. Registration required.
